Don't get stuffed with stuffing this year.
It's no secret, EVERYONE loves the holidays.. and with good reason. Who doesn't love spending time with loved ones, being off of work, and best.. eating FOOD?
But unfortunately, along with food.. comes the pounds. (5-10 pounds every holiday season for the average American) Here's a few simple tips on how you can "fit fitness" into this holiday season to make sure you don't end up looking like the turkey.
This week's Holiday Tips:
1. Slow down
One of the biggest mistakes we make during holiday season isn't the eating, it's over eating. Holidays SHOULD involve good food. But not by the boat load. As research will show, the faster we eat the more we will eat. It takes about 20 minutes for our brain to register that we are getting full. We can easily eat an extra 500 calories a day if we aren't paying attention. Do that 7 days a week, for the whole holiday season (2 months) thats an extra 8 pounds of fat gained. Sound familiar? Oops.
Slow it down, taste your food. Engage in conversation, and let yourself get full.
2. Drink plenty water
SO many reasons behind this one. Like I always tell my clients, water is like magic. You're made of mostly water.. Down it!
Holiday Benefits:
- Faster metabolism
- More energy (for #3)
- Clearer skin (pictures with santa)
- Stay fuller longer, less over eating.
3. Find 30 minutes to exercise
Seriously, just thirty minutes! Go for a walk/run/jog. I know exercise isn't always the most enjoyable pastime, but think about it as your ticket to a tasty dinner. You can make it fun, too. Hit the gym with the family while they are in town, or play a pick up game of your family's favorite sport.. play hard and you'll create a greater calorie deficit.. actually helping you lose weight! Either way, get moving!
4. Holidays aren't just about food..
What did he just say?? That's right. They aren't. Don't fall into the trap.
Try to find enjoyment in the cool air, the voices of family members and warm meals together with loved ones. It may sound goofy.. but so does gaining 10 pounds every holiday season! Family and spirit are the reason for the season, not pie eating contest. So learn to enjoy your holidays, and keep yourself fit while you do.
